Age Matters: Examining the Impact of Homelessness

PDF Print

Guy Johnson brings a wealth of experience and knowledge about the pathways that people enter homelessness and some of the consequences of those pathways.

In this workshop Guy presents further detail on his research into the potential consequences of becoming homeless whilst under the age of 18.

Guy argues that the age of first time homeless is the single greatest indicator for chronic homelessness in the long term. He identifies that where people have had their first experience of homelessness under the age of 18 that the outcomes are far worse with increased mental illness and substance misuse.

Guy finishes by arguing that his research indicates a clear need to focus more on interventions for youth who are at risk of or experiencing homelessness in order to prevent their entry into homelessness and to secure their permanent exit from homelessness.
