Street Care: Consulting with Homeless People

PDF Print

Chris Hartley's presentation looked at Street Care, a structure facilitated by the Homeless Persons Legal Service through one year pilot funding from the City of Sydney.

Street Care was established in February 2009 and provides advice on conducting consultations with homeless people and also provides input into government and agency decision-making processes. There are 7 members who are representative of the homeless population, at least as it's experienced in the urban setting.

Since it's establishment Street Care has:

  • Facilitated consultation with homeless people, for example around the National Human Rights Consultation;
  • Made a number of presentations including to the 2009 Homelessness NSW Conference and running a conference for the Federal Attorney General; and
  • Begun producing a monthly publication - Street Cred.

For the future, Street Care has made application to be part of the Premier’s Council on Homelessness and has begun discussions with Newcastle and other regional areas to look at how to get feedback from homeless people.
