Domestic / Family Violence

The first refuge in Australia for women escaping domestic violence - Elsie - was set up in Glebe, NSW in 1974. Within a year, the Commonwealth Labor Government funded a national women's refuge program.  When the Supported Accommodation Assistance Program (SAAP) was established, the women's refuge program became one of the three major arms of SAAP.

Since those early days,  funding for services for women and children experiencing domestic and family violence has increased and there has been a corresponding increase in the range of models of service delivery.
